What is chorionic villus biopsy?

One of the modern diagnostic procedures is called chorionic villus biopsy. It is an intravenous injection of a drug to determine mutations, genetic abnormalities, or the presence of mental problems.

This procedure is carried out only in order to determine the future fate of pregnancy. A pregnant woman is very difficult to decide on such a study. It can be carried out only after the appointment of a doctor and the results of previous diagnostics, confirming the presence of abnormalities or pathologies.

But before deciding, a woman should understand what a similar diagnostic method is and why it is necessary.

Indications and contraindications for chorionic biopsy

In the course of the biopsy, the doctor takes a piece of the future placenta for analysis. This piece has the same genes with the fruit. Accordingly, according to the results of its analysis, you can monitor the condition of the child and the presence of pathologies in him. The first time such a study was conducted back in 1968. At that time, this method was a breakthrough.

A similar study began to be conducted in order to identify such pathologies in a child as:

  • Down syndrome;
  • Edwards;
  • Patau;
  • Klinefelter;
  • cystic fibrosis;
  • cell anemia.

Through this study, it is possible to establish more than 4,000 genetic diseases and abnormalities. As a rule, a similar measure of diagnosis is carried out only starting from week 10. At this time, the fetus was formed and it is not so much harm to him from outside interference.

It is imperative that diagnostics be carried out before the 13th week of pregnancy, since later a childish place will appear that cannot be damaged.

A biopsy is a powerful intervention and can have consequences for both the mother and the baby. It is therefore carried out only by medical reports. As a rule, a whole commission of doctors sends this procedure after receiving detailed research.

In any case, the risk of a diagnostic study should be justified.

In this connection, certain criteria have been identified that allow us to understand that the chorionic villus biopsy is really necessary:

  • parents are carriers of chromosomal diseases;
  • parents are carriers of genetic diseases;
  • the woman gave birth to a sick child;
  • bad first trimester ultrasound.

In no case can not conduct a study just to reassure parents. This is really a serious diagnosis, which may hurt. Some parents thus want to quickly find out the sex of the child.

But it should be understood that biopsy is a diagnostic study that carries with it a big risk to the health of the mother and child.

As for contraindications, there are a number of signs in which it is strictly prohibited to conduct research:

  • uterine fibroids;
  • bleeding;
  • eczema on the stomach;
  • inflammatory processes of the genital tract;
  • infectious diseases.

Chorionic biopsy technique

Before making a diagnosis, a woman should definitely undergo a series of clinical studies. They include the results of urine and blood tests, vaginal scraping, the general condition of the body, ultrasound of the internal organs.

Initially, a specialist conducting a similar study evaluates how correctly the embryo lies and in what position the uterus is located. Only after such diagnostic measures, you can proceed to the chorionic biopsy.

Although a biopsy is performed using a puncture of the abdomen, it does not imply anesthesia. In rare cases, anesthetize only externally, applying ointment to the location of the puncture.

A woman costs an hour before the study to drink a large amount of liquid, namely plain water. And just before the biopsy is not worth going to the toilet, so that the bladder was filled. This thereby helps to enhance the visualization.

The biopsy technique comes down to the following important steps:

  1. Treatment of the puncture site.
  2. Puncture with immersion.
  3. Changing the position of the needle to the chorial shell.
  4. Immersion in chorion, extraction of the required investigated area.
  5. Removing the needle.
  6. Treatment of the puncture site, dressing.
  7. Examination of the fetus using ultrasound screening.

The estimated time of the study is 30-40 minutes. However, in case of problems, the time may increase.

The results of the study and the possible consequences

On average, a married couple can get the results of the diagnostics already after 3 days. But sometimes the term may be delayed up to several weeks.

Surprisingly, the accuracy of the technique reaches 99%. Accordingly, parents with a high degree of probability will be aware of the presence or absence of problems in the child. Only in rare cases can doctors be completely unsure of their diagnosis. Then it is necessary to conduct a similar study in the late stages of pregnancy.

Conducting chorionic biopsy.

But before conducting a study it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the possible negative consequences in the form of:

  • abortion;
  • uterine bleeding;
  • pain syndrome;
  • infections listed.

According to statistics, only in 1% of cases miscarriages and other negative consequences are possible. Nevertheless, doctors always inform young parents about 1% of negative consequences before conducting a study.

In the event that the results of the analysis show obvious deviations from the norms, then the doctors immediately inform the parents about this. Those in the shortest possible time should take a decision on the future course of pregnancy.

As a rule, in these terms, termination of pregnancy is considered less dangerous than in the later month. Therefore, in the case of deviations, it is worth making a decision immediately.

Dates of the study

It is necessary to carry out diagnostics at the time when the embryo has the main organs, while it is quite large. The approximate duration is from 10 to 13 weeks of pregnancy.

This period is much lower risk of abortion. As a rule, an additional advantage is the presence of the first screening, often as a result of which a diagnostic study is carried out.

How informative chorionbiopsy?

About 4000 genetic and chromosomal diseases can be identified by chorionic biopsy. At the same time, the result of the study has 99% confidence.

Errors in the study can be associated only with the lack of professionalism of specialists. As a rule, according to statistics, this is only 4% of cases.

Total

The cost of the procedure will be entirely and completely dependent on the subsequent diagnosis. If the classic method is required, its price will be acceptable. In that case, if you need not only a complete and detailed, but also a quick analysis, you should think about the high price.
